Choreographer’s note
Rehearsal is a natural phenomenon that has occurred to humankind across the ages. Important rituals have needed rehearsals as rituals for ritual’s sake. By rehearsing close enough to the main event, we prepare our bodies and minds. Because we are anxious about something important, we wish to become skilful. We practice repeatedly to handle it smoothly. Rehearsal is a way to become familiar with something unfamiliar in the space of waiting. It leaves marks on our unconsciousness.
Of the performing arts, dance rehearsal awakens proprioception to imprint the sense of movements into the body. Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense its position, velocity, direction, weight, and posture – either whole or parts. It is a sense of knowing where our body is located and how it moves. Not only when dancing, but also in everyday life, this sense lightens up. There are ways to awaken this sense indirectly without moving. The Neurocognitive Stimulation of Movement is a kind of virtual training in which certain movements are practiced in the imagination without actually moving the body. The method is sometimes used in rehabilitation because it is close to 10% of effect of actually mobalizing the body. This comes from how our brain does not necessarily distinguish between the real and imaginary if imagined vividly enough. The ways to awaken proprioception are self-talk, tactile stimulation, and imagery.
Rehearsal can also be contemplated in connection to ‘enactment’ in psychoanalysis. Enactment is a relational psychoanalysis technique in which events that happened in the past or will happen in the future are called into the present, and a specific scene is created. By having the client act out their feelings or thoughts in the situation instead of verbally describing them, it reveals 'the unthought known'. One can discover one’s own emotions and behavioral patterns that one were not aware of. It helps one to put the behaviors avoided into the action. Sometimes, rehearsal alone may suffice if the act of imagining how one interacts with others are equivalently concrete to the actual face-to-face encounter.
Rehearsal creates two bodies. The American dance scholar, Susan Leigh Foster mentioned how the two bodies occur during dance practice; one, perceived and tangible; the other the aesthetically imagined. Rehearsing body, the first is trying to reach the second body. These two bodies speak to each other. The two mingle and transform each other. The rehearsing body creates an alter ego of the future self and others to be met. This doubling of the body also occurs when watching a rehearsal or talking about it.
The fact that body becomes two means that it creates sociality. Unlike simple solo practice, rehearsal in the usual sense includes social moments. For example, whereas a practice can be conducted alone before a musical concert, rehearsal is a societal event as part of an orchestra. These rehearsals allow individuals to approach the unsolved problems they often face in social settings. Rehearsal renews memories by constantly reversing it, and delays the extinction of events following the passage of time.
There is death, the complete extinction in the etymology of the word ‘rehearsal.’ ‘Rehearse’ was adopted into English in the 13th century and meant repeat, recite or say over again. However, in old days, the word ‘hearse’ in the middle was originally a hook-shaped agricultural implement such as a harrow or plow. People had plowed the fields with hearse envisioning future harvests. One day the hearse was turned upside down and hung from the vehicle that carried the dead body. By the 17th century, a ‘hearse’ indicated a vehicle for carrying a coffin. The harrow was used to hold candles to decorate the coffin. This is how the hearse started to be called hearse. The hearse of the past was attached to the hearse of the present. Why did hearse, which had been cultivating the ground for survival, face the sky in the scene of death? Is a rehearsal for burying something in the ground and in the sky? Is rehearsal a practice for letting go, or is it a practice for leaving? As a shock-absorbing device before extinction, is rehearsal dreaming of eternity after all?
I propose that what humankind is in need of is a sense of rehearsal. If Andrew Hewitt, a cultural researcher, called for 'social choreography' and expected the realm of dance would expand beyond theaters or studios, I shout out for 'social rehearsal' to see what rehearsal can do for society. This shock-absorbing bodily and imaginary device holding extinction and eternity can be a key to resist oppression. The rehearsal has already begun but is not there. It is the moment when it has departed but not arrived. It is pre-performative. It is pseudo-performance and camouflage.
We invite you to this pseudo performance. We will use indirect touching and talking to lighten up your proprioception. As a kind of psycho-choreo, this performance will give an illusion of touch as a gift. In a psychodrama full of speculation and disguise, you will end up putting on the choreography into your body. I am interested in the fact that we share the same ancestors. What has the human nervous system been rehearsing? Also, what are we rehearsing in times of pandemic? What are we waiting for with two bodies? What is being 'enacted' in us as we go through this performance?

He Jin Jang Dance is a project group exploring the contemporary concept of the body and its traces through the four stages of life — birth, aging, sickness and death. HJJD’s artistic research includes staging performances, writing, encouraging discourses and self-organizing platforms to serve all of the above. HJJD debuted in the United States and Austria in 2008, and was recommended as one of the 'Notable Female Choreographer Groups' by the Dance Magazine, USA. The first work, ‘open skin inscribed’, which focused on the skin as a surface constituting what is between the body and society by researching family history of skin diseases, received great acclaim in the States. HJJD’s artistic research has been presented in the form of performances/workshops/lectures at festivals and art organizations in over 30 cities around the world. Returning to Korea in 2015, HJJD presented ‘migrant-self the speed of a door’, ‘Drifting Body’, ‘microhabitat body’, ‘the flowing.’, and ‘You cannot disinvite x-being’. HJJD sees the body's reaction to the inescapable human weakness as the dance of nervous systems, that has so much to uncover in the frame of Live Arts. The performative events created by HJJD provides a powerfully sensuous experiences shifting between monstrosity and contemplation. Using personal history, immersion in the present, and future desires as materials, HJJD explores multiplicity of beings and approach whimsical choreographies.
